BNP (S-H) to amend constitution

[Dhaka Correspondent] The government-backed faction of BNP will convene a council session to amend the party constitution ahead of the deadline set by Election Commission for registration. Acting secretary general of the faction, M Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, told newsmen at his Dhaka residence Thursday that they would complete the process ahead of the deadline for party registration hoping that the changes would reflect the desire of the party leaders and activists.

Procession for relief

[Dhaka Correspondent] Hundreds of agitated people from Dakua and Fulkhali village under Dakua union of Sidr affected Galachipa upazila under Patuakhali district brought out processions demanding relief Thursday morning. Participants of the procession after assembling before the UNO office compound of Galachipa alleged nepotism, irregularities and corruption in relief distribution. They said union parishad chairman and members thinking about their future in electoral politics enlisting and distributing relief among their supporters only.

SoE does not hurt relief ops

[Dhaka Correspondent] Army chief General Moeen U Ahmed has dismissed suggestions that the government lifts state of emergency to facilitate relief operations in the cyclone-ravaged coastal areas. “Has politics got anything to do with relief operations? Tell me,” Moeen asked newsmen after a meeting with US Navy’s Admiral Timothy J Keating in the Army Headquarters Friday. The army chief made the remark in the wake of the demands recently made by some politicians. A statement of the US Embassy in Dhaka said during the meeting with the army chief, Timothy renewed the US commitment to support Bangladesh as it continues its relief operations.

[Dhaka Correspondent] Leaders of left-leaning political parties Friday expressed their dissatisfaction with relief work and coordination in the Sidr-hit districts and urged the government to immediately declare the districts national disaster areas.

AE: Hands off Phulbari

[Dhaka Correspondent] People from all walks of life in Dinajpur Friday vowed to resist open pit mining in the region and any attempt by the controversial Asia Energy to develop the Phulbari coal mine. “Let alone men of Phulbari, ask Asia Energy to come in front of any woman in our area, we will show them how we feel about the company for which people had lost their lives,” Saima Begum, a resident of Phulbari, told a discussion meeting at the National Press Club.
