Lift SoE: Delwar

[Dhaka Correspondent] BNP secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, Monday renewed his call for lifting the state of emergency (SoE) to ensure an atmosphere conducive to implementation of the agenda of the Election Commission and resumption of political activities.

“Immediate lifting of the state of emergency is necessary for implementation of the agenda of the Election Commission and resumption of normal political activities,” Delwar told a group of leaders and activists from Lalbagh, Shyampur and Sutrapur units of Dhaka city BNP at his Dhaka residence.

He also demanded release of the party chairperson Khaleda Zia, her two sons and other party leaders arrested on corruption charges and opening of the party central office, “We have repeatedly urged the authorities to open our central office. We need the office to conduct our everyday activities.”

Delwar described the party’s city unit as the nucleus of its activities and asked activists to remain united at any cost and ensure the party’s advancement, “The city unit is the center of all activities of the party. The movements launched from here spread across the country.”

Meanwhile, BNP chairperson’s adviser ASM Hannan Shah has expressed the hope that the interim government would hand over power to an elected parliament by holding the stalled general election in time.

“I hope the government will hand over power to elected representatives by holding fair polls in accordance with the people’s expectation,” Hannan Shah told newsmen in Gazipur Monday after appearing before the district court in a corruption case filed against him.

He denounced the government for dilly-dallying in allowing the BNP to open its central office and alleged that the government was applying “double standards” in this matter. He warned that the BNP activists would not accept if the government handed over the party office to “sycophants.”

Asked about the process of reconciliation between the conformists in BNP and the followers of the expelled secretary general Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan, Hannan Shah said the latter would have to apologize for tarnishing the image of the party.

Replying to a question about the reported initiative for bringing former BNP leaders Oli Ahmed and AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury back into the party fold, he said, “We have made no initiatives to get them back, as they have left the party voluntarily. If they want to change their mind, we have no comments about the matter at the moment.”

In denial: Moeen U Ahmed

  • General Moeen U Ahmed denies taking approximately Taka 1 crore loan.
  • Puts the loan amount at Taka 35 lakh.
  • Claims he is a victim of “internet propaganda.”
  • Prospectus issued by Trust Bank itself contradicts Moeen.
  • [Mashuqur Rahman, USA.]

Since my post two days ago regarding General Moeen U Ahmed’s tenure as chairman of Trust Bank, General Moeen has responded to the concerns raised by me and others in the Bangladeshi blogosphere by giving a series of interviews to various television, radio and print journalists.

Today General Moeen’s response has been covered by every major Bangladeshi newspaper. General Moeen’s denial and the many interviews he has given surprised me. The blanket coverage in Bangladeshi papers was also surprising. I am sure Bangladeshi readers are confused since this may be the first time they are hearing about the Trust Bank issue since no papers have ever covered it. They must be wondering what General Moeen is responding to.

    Salam Manabendra

[Click any of the thumbnails for a GreyBox show.]

He who raised his hand in defiance against the brutal military junta in Bangladesh embossing a slap on the monster’s face will undoubtedly remain our hero for years to come. He who spat at tyrants and refused to give a “confessional statement” when coerced is the rebel with whose photo we present this photoblog.

The E-Bangladesh team is honored and proud that for hours to come our blog will greet our readers with a photo of Manabendra Dev, one of the key organizers of the anti-military junta protests in Dhaka University that erupted two months back. The 25-year-old president of Bangladesh Student Union was picked up by the “joint forces” on September 16 and taken [according to unconfirmed reports from Dhaka] to a secret JIC/DGFI torture chamber in Uttara. Days later he was produced before a court for fresh remand. After the remand period he was again taken to the court where he declined to give any confessional statement in an unprecedented act of defiance.

He, along with hundreds of professors and students of Dhaka and Rajshahi universities, is now behind bars. This is our tribute to the brave heart. This is our tribute to Deen Islam Angel, a Dhaka University student [also imprisoned after a trip to the DGFI torture chamber] who has become the icon of anti-military protests for the famous kick. This is our tribute to Professor Harun-or-Rashid whom the military arrested and later during the night under curfew took back to the Dhaka University campus and forced him to “lick off” the anti-military graffiti on the walls. This photoblog on the Dhaka University protests in August is our tribute to the rebellion lead by Manabendra, Angel and their comrades.

    Banking: Junta edition

  • General Moeen U Ahmed refused by the Kennedy School of Government.
  • Bangladesh Bank regulations breach: Brother appointed MD of Trust Bank.
  • Taka 99,69,215 loan raises serious questions.
  • Photo: General Moeen Uddin Ahmed.

    [Mashuqur Rahman, USA.]

The head of Bangladesh’s military government, General Moeen U Ahmed, is coming to America. He is accompanied by the Air force chief Air Marshal S M Ziaur Rahman and by the other man instrumental in the January coup, Lieutenant General Masududdin Chowdhury. Last week Bangladesh’s Navy chief was also visiting the United States. It seems like the entire ruling junta is coming to America.

General Moeen, for his part, will be visiting Harvard University on October 21. I am told that the General wanted to speak at the Kennedy School of Government (KSG) but wanted to restrict questions. Harvard refused. So, instead, the General will be speaking to a class rather than in a KSG sponsored public event.
